Not all carbon stems are created equal. What lurks below the surface is not always very evident by the naked eye. Many companies use alloy structures to help strengthen the stem and then cover these structures with a final wrap of either 3k or 12k carbon fiber weave.

 

A quality carbon stem, like most carbon parts are constructed as a single monocoque shell. Similar to the structure of an egg, the monocoque shell provides the strongest and lightest components. Monocoque components are expensize to manufacture due to high tooling costs.
